Entering Friday’s game against their biggest rival, the Oviedo High School Lions, the Lady Wolves were 9-1 on the season. They had been focused on the matchup all week, as the Lions were 10-0.
The winner would prove to be the best women’s lacrosse team in the region, and would have bragging rights until the regional playoffs.

“Oviedo is a team we have always had tension with. Our district isn’t much competition for us, so we look at Oviedo as our true rival,” said senior Rachel Lacy.
The Wolves jumped on top 2-0 thanks to quick goals by junior Briana Burnett and senior Haleigh Brooks. Then, a run by Oviedo put the Lions on top 5-2.
The ladies were able to come back and close the first half on a 6-3 run. Going into halftime, they were winning 8-7 and could taste the victory over their rivals.
The second half was also back and forth. The Wolves acquired a 10-8 lead, but the Lions fired back. Oviedo was able to take back the lead 12-11 with five minutes left in the game.
Senior Elie Yenor came up with a huge goal a minute later, tying the game. However, the Wolves’ defense gave back the lead, and ultimately came up short. The final score was 13-12 in favor of the Lions.
“Whenever we play them it’s less about skill and more about the mental game. I think we have trouble getting past ourselves and just leaving it all on the field,” said senior Sabrina Guerrero.
The tough loss stings for the ladies, but they know if they take care of business in the district they should get another shot.
“That isn’t the last time we will see them. We plan on seeing them in regionals, and we are going to come out stronger than ever,” said Lacy.
