Tryouts for Beach Volleyball in February

By Amaya Rosario

With getting back from winter break, girls have a month to get ready for beach volleyball tryouts. Beach volleyball is now at Timber Creek for its second year. At first, girls didn’t know that our school held this as a sport. Our school has been known for the winning teams we have put together every year. Last year our school went 5-2 overall. That was such a strong start to a new sport. We lost in the quarter-finals last year but will that change this year?

Beach volleyball has a lot of strong girls showing up to tryouts this year, a lot more than the prior year. Head Coach Julianna Calcote said, “I am very confident with the girls this year. I think it’s because we had such a successful year last year.” Last year’s success really impacted the beach volleyball community for this year. More girls are showing up this year, especially varsity girls from indoor and freshman this year.

Although we do not have a sand court at our school the tryouts will be at Waterford sand courts. It is about a 15-minute drive from the school but it could be farther or closer depending on where you live. The tryouts will be on February 6th and 8th. It will take place from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm. The tryouts could only be one day depending on how many girls show up.

The competition is much different this year especially since our school has been moved to a new pool of schools. We will be playing new schools like Hagerty and Oviedo High School. Both of these schools have great volleyball teams as we have seen from indoor volleyball. This season is going to be competitive. The games are going to be action-packed and there will be no slowdown, but we have faith that our girls will keep up and push forward to finals.

The competition will be fierce considering how many girls are coming out for tryouts. It will be tough to decide who will make the team based on how much talent there is this year. Freshmen this year are extra excited for the season. Jaydalis Valda said, “I am really excited for this season this year and for tryouts.” She has been playing volleyball for about five years now and has a lot  of confidence going into tryouts. She knows a lot of the girls and thinks no matter who makes the team, the connection between everyone will be there. So many of them are super excited to see who will make the team and what everyone will bring to the table. Everyone comes from different backgrounds and having a diverse group of girls will make this year so fun.

Playing beach is also giving girls more practice for indoor volleyball. Many of them play club so beach will improve them so much. From their speed to the basic fundamentals these athletes will learn how to work with people and become a great team player throughout the season.

Overall, this year’s beach volleyball is going to be more than exciting, not only for the girls trying out but for the people that come out to watch and cheer them on. Mark February 6th on your calendars for our 2023 girls’ beach volleyball tryouts.
