2017 was a pretty rough year for a lot of us. It seemed to go on forever and was just riddled with bad luck but we don’t often look at the positive thing that happened during the cursed year. We all seemed to have our troubles with the tragic hurricane season that took us by storm to the election that not everyone agrees with that lead to rioting.

Positive thing that happened are women who had been harassed and assaulted in the workplace stood up and spoke up and, in many cases, were listened to and believed . Australia became the 25th country to achieve marriage equality, with both houses of the legislature voting overwhelmingly in its favor following a voluntary mail survey that showed clear public support. Same-sex couples also will be able to marry in Austria by January 2019, according to a court ruling there. Grainne McCall a 10th grade student  commented by saying, ” I think it is good that the world is becoming more accepting of people and their lifestyles.”

The teen pregnancy rate continued to fall, as reported in June of 2017 . It dropped 9 percent in 2016 from the previous year and has fallen 67 percent since 1991. “It’s great that people are becoming more responsible when it comes to teen pregnancy and I think it is because the education on the topic has improved,” said 11th grade student  Anthony Nixon when talking to reporter. Crime rates have begun to fall as well with a decrease of about 2% nation wide and small progress is progress. Women in Saudi Arabia were granted permission to drive starting in June we are getting there one step at a time. RenovaCare developed a device called the SkinGun that sprays burn victims with their own stem cells. These cells help the damaged skin regrow with no scars. The device is awaiting FDA approval, but has already proven successful for patients in both the US and Germany.

Chance the Rapper, an unsigned hip-hop artist who released a streaming-only album, won three Grammy awards. Beyonce gave birth in June to twins Rumi and Sir. Mattel unveiled a sporty, hijab-wearing Barbie, modeled on Olympic fencer Ibtihaj Muhammad. Ms. Muhammad is the first Muslim American woman to win an Olympic medal. Prince Harry and his girlfriend Meghan Markle got engaged. The couple have been dating since mid 2016 and confirmed there engagement in november of 2017. 2017 may have been crazy for the majority of us but for others it was the best year of their life and we need to appreciate all the time we are given good or bad because we learn from that bad and must cherish the good.
