Members of Timber Creek High School’s Pre-Med Club had the special opportunity to serve their community at the Ronald Mcdonald House in Downtown Orlando this past January. Students from all grade levels had the opportunity to prepare a home-cooked meal for the residents of the house, where families often don’t have access to hot food every evening.

The Ronald Mcdonald House (RMDH) is located near the Florida Hospital in Downtown Orlando. RMDH provides comfortable housing for the families of patients in long-term care in an Orlando Hospital or medical center. This allows families to stay close together during the duration of their child’s care. The houses include many guest rooms, a gathering room, and a large kitchen, which is where the Pre-Med club was able serve the house’s residents.

Led by junior Megan Richards, the student volunteers cooked a “breakfast for dinner” meal, consisting of pancakes, waffles, bacon, eggs, fruit, and many other breakfast foods. The volunteers had some prep time, then the residents of the home soon came downstairs to enjoy their home-cooked meal. This communal meal time allowed the residents to interact with the student volunteers as well as other residents of the home.

Subsequent to the event, the Pre-Med Club sponsor, Mrs. Stevens, received a cordial thank-you note from the Ronald McDonald House. The note explained that the residents loved the breakfast for dinner meal and they enjoyed getting to know some of the students from the Pre-Med club. Stevens said, “The owners of the house liked that the meal offered so much variety, that way people with food allergies could still find something to eat.” The students of Pre-Med club loved this community service event and plan to return to cook another meal for the residents of the Ronald McDonald House.
