Becoming a Veterinarian

By Samantha McQuiggan

Are you dreaming about becoming a Veterinarian? Or could this dream happen. Well Timber Creek can help with that. They can help by going into the Vet Assisting program. You are able to become certified to work anywhere from a veterinary hospital to an animal shelter, or even just pet sit for a friend.

This vet program is able to make students at Timber Creek enjoy being with animals, and not think something animal related that they did in science class was gross. These students in vet are wanting to become a veterinarian, because they love being with animals. In this program, students are able to learn all about an animal, from how they walk to what is inside of them. Now, it might seem gross to look at the inside side of an animal, but that is a part of being a vet. You have to make sure you truly love animals, so you are easily able to look inside of one for medical reasons.

Senior Jill McQuiggan has been taking Vet assisting class for all four years that she has been at Timber Creek. She has really enjoyed taking this class with the teachers at this school. She said, “I would say that this vet program is a very good program to be in if you want to get to know about animals. Even if you just want to learn about an animal and not want to be a vet, that is alright. I have loved taking care of all the dogs, and the animals that have been dropped off at the vet lab. I always love taking care of all the dogs, and other animals that are in the vet lab. I really love this dog, his name is Obby. He belongs to Colonel David Schiffert. He is one of our teachers we have in our school, and everyone loves his sweet dog Obby. Also, I very much love being able to learn new things about animals, especially being able to learn different types of breeds of the dog. Also, we do a lot of dissections. Some Of the animals we do dissections on are cats, and dogs. Which can get a little gross, but you are still able to learn about the true insides of an animal. This is why I love taking the vet program at Timber Creek. It is truly amazing.”

As a student in vet assisting, you are able to enjoy the class. Sometimes the class can become very challenging and hard to take in. But vet assisting, like McQuiggan said, is very enjoyable, but sometimes you will do some dissections in the class that might be  gross, but that is the joy of the class for some people. Now, there might not be a whole lot of people who think that, but it is true, that is just how badly they want to become a vet. It takes a lot of power to get through something you don’t really like or think is disgusting to look at.

Freshman Zain Abu-Zahra has been taking this class for a semester, and she also agrees with some things Jill had to say. She has said, “I have really enjoyed taking this class. It has given me a chance to learn a lot more about animals and how they work. I was very excited when I had gotten into this class. Also, I had gone into this class thinking I was just going to learn about animals and take care of them. Which I was right, but a lot of work is being put into this class. You are truly working hard in this class, it is only because they teaching you, and showing us how hard it is to be a vet. That is what I think about the Timber Creek Vet Program.”
