Students in the Pre-Med Program Attend Volunteer Events to Help the Community

Does the Pre-med Club located at Timber Creek actually make a difference? For starters, Pre-med is a club that takes place on the Timber Creek campus after school. The group usually meets once or twice a month. These meetings are usually held by students, but there is a club advisor, Mrs. Stevens. This club consists of a variety of activities from listening to being hands on. For instance, sometimes the club invites a guest speaker to talk about their profession in the medical field. The students gather in the media center and listen to the guest speaker present their job which is usually on a Google Slides Presentation. In addition, this club also offers hands-on activities such as dissecting animals such as a rat or even a small shark.
Activities such as these help students learn medical experience from a younger age resulting in better, more knowledgeable people in the medical field for the future community. When students are given the opportunities to learn and perform these activities it helps the students in later medical classes or even in college to prepare them for the future. “Attending a meeting with the guest speaker gives me more information about all the fields I could possibly be in,” said Shefali Gutpa, who plans to become a doctor.
However, providing opportunities for students to learn and experience medical-related activities, the club also offers countless community service opportunities to help and support medical conditions. An example of this could be the Arthritis Walk, where students were able to volunteer there. This was a marathon run located in Baldwin Park, Florida. Gupta attended this event. This event allowed her to raise money and awareness for people suffering with Arthritis. During this event, she volunteered by serving water to the people who were running and helping people send up their stands. The event required her to wake up at 5:00 am to be there at 6:30am and she volunteered for this event for a total of 6 hours, ending at 12:30pm. “Even if volunteering at this event didn’t make a huge difference in the community, it made a small one, and a small difference is still a difference.” stated Gupta. In addition, student, Samath Chorco, explained that she thought being in this club made her feel if she was making a difference in the community. “Now I am, yes,” she said. The Pre-med Club provides countless opportunities both in and out of school that affects the community both short and long term.
