Hosa is a club here at Timber Creek that allows for students to explore the medical field. Hosa’s mission is to help push opportunities in healthcare in the healthcare industry. Students in this club study and compete in many different categories in the medical field. Hosa is a competitive club that competes at the regional, state, and international levels and is recognized by the U.S. Development of Education and the Department of Health and Human services and federal and state agencies.

During competitions, in order for students to move on to the different levels, they have to place in the top 3 of their category. Hosa gives these students medical knowledge and chances at scholarships at these events. Sophomore Brook-Lynn Garica states, “I think HOSA is a really invaluable experience. Studying for competitions in any category provides a comprehensive knowledge of the subject that I honestly don’t believe could be achieved without the context of a competition to motivate people.”

Not only are these students given opportunities to gain knowledge, but they are able to build connections with other students who share their interest in the medical field. There are many categories that involve competing with a team. During states, the students aren’t taking tests 24/7. Each student only needs to compete in their category once. During the conventions, the students are free to roam around the hotel and hang out with one another. This leaves time for students to converse with one another and even meet new people from other schools. These relations can help students understand some of the other categories that other students are participating in. Hosa is a club that any student may join. Not only do they find new friends, but new family as well, Patel says, “I think being a part of HOSA has allowed me to make my own little family where everyone always has each other’s backs, no matter what.”

Although it is a lot of work, it can be very helpful for students who want to pursue a job in the medical field. This club offers medical experiences and knowledge to these students through the different competition categories. This club stretches across the world, allowing students from everywhere to participate and acquire new medical knowledge, this lets students from all around the world connect over healthcare during the international competitions.

New interactions! Junior Dia Patel is the president of Hosa this year and is really passionate about this club. Not only is she going to states this year, but last year as well. When she was there, not only was she able to learn, but to interact with new people. Patel states, “I competed at STATES last year, where we were able to interact with other HOSA chapters, especially when our chapter would attend the night conferences and over 3,000 members would get together and have the night of our lives!” (Junior Dia Patel, Sophomore Brook-Lynn Garcia, Junior Dishti Patel, and Senior Victoria Bulerinl)
