The last thing a student would want in their academic life is to get involved in a dull, uneventful club. The Cancer Awareness Society (CAS) club at Timber Creek High School is spoken of to be just the opposite. Having a great amount of involvement to offer, this club focuses on raising awareness to all types of cancers and raises donations for those fighting cancer.

With CAS having many volunteer opportunities, senior club member Bryanna Silveira has attended five volunteer events. One event experience that stood out to Silveria the most was the Relay For Life cancer walk. “We went to this football stadium and we walked with people who survived cancer and we supported them,” explained Silveria. Silveria encourages others to partake in cancer awareness volunteer work, “It like really helps the community. It’s something people deal with on a daily basis throughout the country.”

The reason for interest in CAS varies uniquely from student to student. Senior Kenneth Ragin explained he joined this club  because he had cancer when he was younger. Ragin states CAS is his favorite club at Timber Creek. “It’s really fun. Your friends are there, you can make new friends inside the club as well, and you get to learn about more than just one type of cancer.”

Behind every CAS decoration around Timber Creek is a club member eager to help out their community. CAS often hosts events to create and hang posters around campus to raise awareness. Hanging up posters, Ragin stated, “I liked being outside. It was fun walking around and being with the other members.”  There are many other volunteering opportunities around campus, such as selling lemonade around campus towards a non-profit organization, ‘Alex’s Lemonade Stand.’

Having a great cause, CAS serves as an inspiration to both Ragin and Silveira. “This club inspires me because I want to make a cure for cancer,” said Ragin. “Cancer still affects my family so I would definitely still support this type of volunteer work in the future,” said Silveira. CAS welcomes any and all students to be a part of their club. Getting involved in cancer awareness volunteer work can make a great difference in many people’s lives.
