 Broadway in Orlando presents Wicked

The Dr. Phillips center  for the Performing Arts is a center that luckily for us is right Downtown in Orlando, Florida. This center is a performing arts center and many. The Dr. Phillips Center has impacted central Florida in many great ways. It gives the community an opportunity to celebrate cultural differences, gives more jobs to the people and gives central Florida this creative energy that lifts everyone’s spirits in a positive and happy manner. According to the Dr.Phillips Center, education is the important key for them. Public Relations Manager, Robert Jones says on the Wicked website, “Our goal is to be more than just a building, but an institution that serves as a resource for artistic learning, creativity and community-building.”

This year on January 11-29, 2017, Tuesday-Sunday, the musical Wicked was being held at the Dr. Phillips center. The play Wicked looks at what happened in the Land of Oz but at a very unique level. Before the character we all know as Dorothy arrives in The Land of Oz, another young woman with emerald-green skin was born. When she crosses paths with a bubbly blonde their rivalry turns into a friendship full of problems and emotions. The world then starts to refer to one as “wicked,” and the other as “good.” This play has been extremely successful and has been praised by The New York Times as “the defining musical of the decade.” In the Time Magazine it states, “if every musical had the brain, the heart and the courage of WICKED, Broadway really would be a magical place.”

Many of our Timber Creek High School students even got to experience this outstanding musical in January at the Dr. Phillips center. Sophomore, Anna Yoakum attended this play and she gave nothing but positive feedback. She stated she “was extremely excited beforehand to see Wicked because I remember seeing it as a kid and this made me have very high expectations and those expectations were for sure met.” Yoakum also says she “Thought the special effects went along perfect with every scene and characters.” According to Yoakum all the characters were spot on and it felt like she was actually in this play because of how interacting this play was. Wicked left Yoakum with a “joyful feeling” and she will see it again next time it plays.

The Mendez twins who attend Timber Creek and are in 11th grade attended this play with their family. Alexis Mendez says that “this is my favorite musical of all time because of the wonderful production.” Her twin brother Zachary Mendez agreed with this statement and they both said they would recommend this play to others. Alexis was so intrigued by this play that she waited 2 hours just to meet the cast. She was so thrilled to meet Elphaba played by Jessica Vosk and Glinda played by Amanda Jane Cooper.
