That’s Gross

When you go to school you expect to learn in a clean and safe environment. For some reason, OCPS seems to be having a hard time trying to keep up with being clean. On the first day of school everything seems to be fine, the floors are nice and reflection, the bathrooms are clean, and classrooms are so neat but it doesn’t last. About 2 weeks into the school year you’ll notice that the one clean school that was there has totally disappeared. You’re now walking in halls with trash on the floor and dead cockroaches on the floor and in the light sockets. It doesn’t stop yet, there is also overflows in the trashcan in the classroom of teachers. They sit there for about a week until someone remembers to come pick it up. I conducted an experiment in 10th grade about how frequently a class is cleaned by putting a ball of paper on the ground to see if the janitorial staff would pick it up, instead it stayed on the ground for 3 more remaining days. The bathrooms are also a problem they provide students with soap that doesn’t even fulfill its basic task of cleaning your hand. It’s more of just a fluff that goes on your hand and a good majority of the time when that fluff runs out you have to wait at least a good week until they replace it. That’s disgusting because it’s basically encouraging students that they don’t need to wash their hands after they have used the restroom. The bathrooms also have trash on the floor like toilet paper, pad wrappers and tampon wrappers and once they appear on the floor you can basically guarantee that the trash will remain there until 2-3 days. Don’t even get me started about their sanitation problems. They also lack the training to properly disinfect filthy areas. An example of that would be a student threw up in one the classroom of a teacher. She called to have someone clean it up. The next day when the teacher came into the class she was greeted to a half clean floor, vomit on table tops, and also vomit on the table legs. The person that cleaned the floor supposedly put absorbent powder all on the floor and swept it up and was basically on their way. They didn’t even have the decency to disinfect the tables, or even use a mop to remove any leftover particles. Not only is that disgusting but it is also a violation of health code.

OCPS is great, but they need to stop being cheap and invest in more janitorial staff and sanitary materials in order to catch up with the mess that is produced at the school. They want to see us be comfortable but how can we when each classroom is knee high in trash.
