Catching Up With Jamari Saint Cyr

By Jordan Jenkins

Jamari Saint Cyr, Apopka High School sophomore and first-year staff writer for The Blue and White, is definitely a one-of-a-kind individual. While just about everyone who has interacted with him would likely describe him as being quiet and/or nice, but he has a vibrant personality and strong interests that reveal themselves as you get to know him. He is a hardworking student, on top of being a member of the Apopka High School Debate Team, Beta Club, and National English Honor Society. Beyond school, he is an active enjoys writing and reading fiction and a fan of all things pop culture.

How would you say that you’ve changed from the beginning of the school year to now?

I’d say that I’ve learned my learning abilities. I’ve come to know them better, compared to freshman year and the beginning of my sophomore year I’ve learned more of where I excel and more of where I’m not the most academic, but I’ve learned what my weaknesses are and where my strengths lie.

Looking forward into 2018, what is one thing you are most looking forward to and why?

I’d say just summer break, to be honest. Just because I feel like, for some reason, this year has just been the most academically exhausting year for me, and I’m kind of just looking forward to any upcoming break just to have time to breath and do what I enjoy doing outside of school.

And do you have any specific plans for the summer?

My parents are trying to make me start driving, but I’m not eager to get a license. I’ll be volunteering, I think, in the summer. And I was previously planning on looking into getting a job.

Currently, what’s your favorite thing in pop culture and why?

With Oscar season coming up, I’ve been more looking into the Oscar award show films, I guess. Like I, Tonya and Ladybird. Those sorts of films.

If you had to recommend just one book for everybody to read that you feel best represents you, what would it be?

I feel weird recommending it, just because of how old it is, but a book that I think defines me is Divergent by Veronica Roth, just because ever since I’ve read that book the stories never really left me since middle school and it’s still a prominent aspect of my life up to now.

Do you still consider yourself to be a writer? Are there any projects you’d like to discuss?

Yeah, I’d still consider myself a writer. I’m always productive doing things and I’ve had ideas here and there that I’ve pursued. So yeah, I’m always productive.

What’s a fact about yourself that you think best encapsulates who you are?

I would say, probably, that I’m always looking for the best in people. Because I never want to hate anybody, without proper judgment, I guess. So I’m always looking for redeeming qualities in those where it may not be suited.

What’s an unpopular opinion that you have?

Oh, I know this is unpopular — an unpopular opinion that I have is that a majority of Marvel films are mediocre, and are kind of overhyped.
