In the crowd of students who attend Apopka High School, senior Jessica Spiegal stands out as a leader amongst her peers. She plays many roles throughout the school, be it directing the school marching band on Friday nights throughout fall in her role of head drum major, or leading the girl’s lacrosse team to victory in her role as team captain. On top of those activities, she also serves as a regular anchor on the Darter News Network and Vice President of the Interact Club, all the while balancing the responsibilities of school.
How did you get into the position of drum major?
It started my sophomore year. I got a leadership position as drill assistant, that way I kind of learned and I kind of got the feel of things, being able to step out of my comfort zone as a leader.
In junior year, I was selected as the assistant drum major, and you know you have to go through audition processes and interviews, but my junior it really helped me to grow as a leader and really have good relationships with my peers and other students.
Then my senior year, I had to go through it again, all the auditions and interviews, and I was able to get head drum major this year, and that was probably one of the best experiences of high school.
Prior to your sophomore year, were you involved with band?
Yes
What did you play?
I played French Horn.
Are you involved with any extracurricular activities outside of band?
I’m on the lacrosse team, I’ve actually been captain this will be my second year as captain. I’ve also been in the Interact Club.
Is it hard to juggle all of those activities?
At times, yes it can. Like, in the fall, band takes up a lot of time, and then we play lacrosse in the fall. You know, having to go right from band practice to lacrosse practice and doing things like that, so it really does take up a lot of time.
Do you have any hobbies you enjoy outside of school?
I really work on band and lacrosse outside of school, and hanging out with friends.
