What’s Up With Class Council?

By Victoria Mezera

Class council is a gathering of students and teachers who come together to help make decisions for the school. At Apopka High School, the class councils do a lot for the school. They make floats for the homecoming pep rally, they do drives for the holidays, and they organize activities and plans around the school. Each grade level has their own class council, comprising of a sponsor, and all grade levels except freshmen have a student president and vice president. Our Senior Class Council is sponsored by Mrs. Beechum, the president is Julianna Domenech, and the vice president is Anya Rambaram. The Junior Class Council is sponsored by Mr. Anchel, who failed to get back to us before publication date. The Sophomore Class Council is sponsored by Mrs. Lieffers, and the president is Alayna Dean, while the vice president is Lena Firlotte. Lastly, the Freshmen Class Council is sponsored by Mrs. Richard, and has no president or vice president.

All of the class councils are taking care of some pretty cool stuff around the school. The Senior Class Council is in the midst of organizing all of the special senior events such as grad bash and senior week, along with the lip sync battle. They’re also organizing a Sadie Hawkins Dance for Valentines Day, for seniors only. They’re putting in lots of hard work and long hours to make these events great. Sophomore Class Council is working on things such as Relay For Life, which is a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. They’re also gathering more ideas on what else they can do. Freshman Class Council is also working on Relay For Life and are doing fundraising. Junior Class Council’s activities are unknown, as nobody involved in junior class council could respond to us on time.

Overall, class councils are doing wonderful things for the school. It provides a variety of opportunities to get involved in your school, and students who participate in class council couldn’t agree more. Lena Firlotte, the sophomore vice president, says she loves being in class council. She feels “students should try their best to be more involved. The hard work pays off.” Julianna Domenech, the senior president, claims class council is one of the best clubs at the school, citing that being an active participant in student and senior affairs is great, along with all the hard work and dedication. She recommends that students join because “it gets you more involved with the school, but it also allows you to help shape how you want your school year to be. Just like how the other officers and I tell our council, everything starts with the students; they develop the overall mood and setting of what their class will be.”

Overall, class council is a great way to get involved with the school. If you’re interested in student affairs and ways to make the school better, consider joining class council. The students in reccomend it, and it’s full of wonderful exciting opportunities. Applications for joining class council typically go out near the end of the year, so make sure to grab one if you want to apply!
