April 12, 2019 – – Who needs a fairy godmother when you have grandma. At the age of one, Sophomore Tiffany Wangui‘s grandmother took on the responsibility of raising her grandchild along with her husband when Tiffany’s parents moved to America. For 9 years it was Tiffany and her grandparents in a country in Africa called Kenya until Tiffany moved to America along with her parents in December of 2012 and has lived there since.

“She’s like a parent to me, she raised me when i was really small for about 9 years. She taught me right from wrong,” she says. Tiffany’s grandmother took on the responsibility of raising her along with her parents when she was younger. “She’s the reason I am the way I am today, and i  thank her for that.’ she added.

When Tiffany was younger a common activity for Tiffany and her grandmother to do would be for her grandmother to tell Tiffany  stories in the kitchen while she cooked. One of the stories was about a girl from a poor family who couldn’t afford education who moved to America and begun selling books to pay for schooling. She later on went on to become a successful doctor who saved the life of a young girl from her past who was battling a severe illness. “The stories gave me a different perspective on life and helped me to understand that people go through different things in life.” Tiffany said.  Tiffany’s grandma’s stories showed tiffany that no matter where you came from or how much money you have you can still be successful and make a name for yourself as long as you work hard and put your mind to it.

Today Tiffany’s grandmother still lives in Kenya. Staying in touch is hard but important to Tiffany. “We talk on the phone as much as possible but its hard with the time difference.” Tiffany said. Tiffany’s grandma plays an important role in Tiffany’s life, her significance to Tiffany is seen through the support and help she gave while Tiffany’s  parents weren’t able to be there.
