Bring Back the Five

It’s that holiday time of year again. Family is coming into town because Thanksgiving is all about spending time with family and feeling thankful for your life. Except you don’t get to do any of that until Wednesday.

Starting this year Orange County Public Schools transitioned back into three-day fall break. This will also result in ending the first semester before our winter break.

“What was OCPS thinking? I need my beauty rest,” said outraged freshman Akeem Muller.

For decades the three-day break was the normal schedule until they switched it to a five-day break in 2006. This year we went back to the three-day because this is our “catch up year” according to Principal Dr. Mark Shanoff. The OCPS calendar shows a full week of break again for next year.

“It’s good that the semester ends before winter break this year because you get to finish everything before the break and actually get your break,” Mackenzie Lucas from the graduating class explained.

Because of the shortened fall break the second grading period will end the Friday before we leave for winter break.

“I wish we could have a whole week of fall break and have the grading period end before Christmas, but we can’t have it all,” sophomore Lea Kelvington said with a smile.
