And the Award Goes to: Recap of the 2018 Oscars

Sunday, March 4, millions tuned into to their local networks to view the 90th Oscars.

Returning host Jimmy Kimmel opened the show with a monologue instead of the traditional opening show number. The host promised there would be no mix-ups with the envelopes like last years disaster. Kimmel also issued a challenge to everyone who received an award-promising a jetski and island vacation to the person with the shortest acceptance speech.

The entire show featured movie montages of past winners in the category being announced, which I thought was cute. I liked seeing the slow progression of the older films into the current ones-it was like a reminder of how far the movie industry has gone in terms of representation and diversity.

This year though there were many women nominated, only six women took home Oscars this year including Frances McDormand for her performance in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. McDormand made a moving speech and invites every woman nominated to stang with her as she accepted her award.

Beloved film, Coco, won Best animated film and song. The award-winning song was performed by the cast and singer Miguel during the show.

The Shape of Water, a film revolving around a mute woman and a corrupt government, was the most nominated film of the night snagging 13 nominations. The film received for Oscars including Best Film.

The most unexpected award recipient of the night was retired NBA player Kobe Bryant for his animated short film Dear Basketball. Bryant mentioned how special the monumental the win was for sports players and how most creative opportunities like these don’t happen often for sports players.

Despite all the amazing films nominated, I was happiest when Jordan Peele’s Get Out won best original screenplay. It’s so seldom movies come along and shake up the media and community the way Get Out was able to.

As promised the 2018 Oscars went off without a hitch. Costume designer Mark Brides won the prizes for shortest speech. All in all, I say it was a pretty good show.
