Welcome to this week’s edition of High Notes.  Each week, HIGH NOTES will bring you the most important information that you need to know so that you can stay “in the know” about everything happening in the band program.

Today is 9/11. In 2001, 9/11 was a gorgeous Tuesday. I was a young band director doing what all band directors do in September … marching band! It was first period, and it was the only year in my entire career that I had first period planning (which I hated, by the way). I was at my desk working on writing the drill for that evening’s rehearsal when Allen, Jr.’s mom called me and told me to turn on the television. I started watching just before 9 AM and I watched the events unfold on TV, the same as millions of other Americans did. When the bell for 2nd period rang, the color guard class filed in, and those kids were shocked and scared. We just sat and watched the whole period, in fact, the whole day was more of the same. Lots of talk, lots of tears, lots of emotions. The whole day felt surreal. I knew this would be my generation’s “Kennedy Assassination Moment” that we would all remember vividly for the rest of our lives.

That afternoon, my band’s chaplain came to me and asked for time to speak before evening rehearsal started and, of course, I said yes. Her dad was a preacher and she spoke like a seasoned professional. I can’t tell you what she said, but I will never forget how her words made me feel. That rehearsal was one of the best rehearsals I have ever directed. Inspired by her words and the resolve of the American spirit, those students marched and played with a purpose they had never known before that. We went on to have one of our best seasons ever. We drew strength from unity and from the realization that we only have one chance to do what we were doing.

Twenty-one years later, I will be sounding Taps, as I have done for years, at the City of Clermont’s ceremony of remembrance. Our police chief was a first responder that morning in New York City and was covered with the ash of those buildings. His story is one of thousands … but he was one of the lucky ones. I am reminded every year of how lucky we all are that we have this chance to live in this country and be a part of this amazing thing we call marching band. Thank you for sharing this journey with me. Thank you all for being the “why” for me.

For those of you who do not know about 9/11 and what happened, here is a link for you to learn about the events of this day: https://www.history.com/topics/21st-century/9-11-attacks

ALL-STATE BAND: There will be a post later today giving you information about audition times and room assignments. The auditions are next Saturday at Ocoee H.S.

SPIRIT NIGHT: We have a Spirit Night on Thursday, September 22, 2022, at California Pizza Kitchen! Please mark your calendars and plan to be there. It will run ALL DAY so you can go for lunch or dinner, and it will count for us! It includes take-out, catering, and online orders too (enter BACK20% at checkout). Tell all your friends and neighbors and be sure to share our post on social media. Check it out now!

They will need to be picked up after Friday night’s game and returned by Tuesday, September 20. To volunteer, sign up on the Band App or email board@erhsband.com. Thank you!

BAND PARENT MEETING: We will have a band parent meeting this week on Thursday evening. The meeting will begin at 6:30 PM in the Tech Theatre room.

This is the first all-music department collaboration concert we have had in a while so please come out and see the show!

WASHINGTON D.C. TRIP: The band and orchestra are planning to take a trip to Washington, DC to perform and share an educational experience together. We will travel from March 9 – March 13 and the total cost of the trip is $925 per student. We will be conducting some “trip exclusive” fundraising opportunities for students who are planning to take this trip.  Please note that students must have all their music department fees paid before they will be allowed to travel with us. The last day to reserve a spot on the trip is this Thursday, September 15th.  Be sure to join the Washington, D.C. Band App which can be found on Band Central.

CORPORATE SPONSORS: If you wish to help us obtain corporate sponsors, please use the link on Band Central Station to get the packet. A 10% scholarship from each corporate sponsor will be awarded to the student who signs up the sponsor!

SENIORS: Senior interviews are due on Thursday. Please be sure to complete yours for the senior night memory book. The link can be found on Band Central.

IMPORTANT NOTE TO PARENTS: We have had a few issues regarding parental behavior at football games. It is important that all parents respect the policies and procedures the band has in place for the safety and well-being of the students put under our care.  Listed below are a few reminders:

  • If you are not an official chaperone for the event, you are NOT permitted in the band’s seating area, regardless of reason. Chaperones are vetted for each game / performance and approved ahead of time. It’s not personal, it’s about following OCPS rules which are in place for the safety of all students involved.
  • Students are NOT permitted in the paid spectator seating for any reason. Do not call your student over. Please pre-plan, give them cash ahead of time, and see them after the game.
  • Cell phones are NOT permitted in uniform. This means that from call time to dismissal, students are not permitted to be on their phones. Please do NOT call or text them as they will not be able to respond. I am allowing them to carry them in their bag for emergencies, but that is all. Please do not ask your student to break the rules of the band program.
  • We love when parents wear ERHS Band shirts to games! Thank you for your support! We are so glad to have you at the games in the bleachers to cheer on our band! Please understand, however, only parents whose names are submitted ahead of time as being chaperones or concession workers will receive free admission and parking. Please do not ask for those benefits unless you are there working on behalf of our students. We do still have LOTS of opportunities for you to work if you want to help though! Sign up today on Charms if you wish to volunteer. All volunteers MUST be registered through ADDitions to serve the band in any capacity. See Band Central for the link to get registered!

Welcome to this week’s edition of High Notes.  Each week, HIGH NOTES will bring you the most important information that you need to know so that you can stay “in the know” about everything happening in the band program.

Congratulations to the Falcon Vanguard for a fantastic debut performance! Our pre-game show was awesome and really got the crowd ready for the game. Being in the bleachers for the first time in a number of years was super fun and gave us the ability to really support our team. Halftime was well done and well received by the audience. Our demeanor and pride showed throughout the game and we definitely stepped up our game!  All of this on the heels of the Johnny’s House performance that had us all at school way too early!!

I would also like to shout out our AMAZING band parent staff. For as much work as our students put in, our parent volunteers pour themselves out day in and out to ensure that this band program is successful. From concessions to chaperoning, pit crew to uniforms and everything in between, band parents make it all work. Thank you to each mom and dad who played a part in our success this week. We appreciate you all!

BAND FORMS – VERY IMPORTANT: All band forms are past due.  Please remit them NOW.  You will NOT be permitted on the away trip this week without all of your band paperwork completed and turned in.   If you have not done this yet, stop reading this right now and get it done. You can come back to this when you have finished your paperwork. Seriously, you will NOT get on a bus Friday without all of this done.

Weekly Briefing – Week of June 19, 2022

Dear Falcon Vanguard Families:

Welcome to the 2022-23 school year! I am very excited that each one of you have decided to be a part of the Attitude, Spirit, and Pride of the ERHS Falcon Vanguard!

Happy Father’s Day to all of our Band Family Dads, Grandfathers, Step Fathers, and Father Figures. We appreciate you all for what you bring to your families and our band family too! Also, Happy Juneteenth as OCPS commerates this important day in our nation’s history. For those of you who wish to know more about the significance of Juneteenth, please visit http://www.juneteenth.com.

This week and next week, we will continue our rehearsal schedule as we have. These Tuesday evening rehearsals are required unless you are out of town on vacation. I think there was a mixed signal that they are not mandatory. Please do NOT skip these rehearsals unless you are on vacation with your family … and in that case, please enjoy your time away! We will have a board member parent in the room on Tuesdays to assist any parents with paperwork or uploading the forms that OCPS requires.

Rehearsal times for June 21 & June 28: Percussion & Guard: 5 PM to 9 PM, Woodwinds 5:30 PM to 7 PM and Brass 7:30 PM to 9 PM.

OCPS will be closed the week of July 4th so there will NOT be a rehearsal on July 5th.

Percussion Camp will begin on July 11. Please follow the schedule that was sent home with your student. This can also be found on the calendar on Charms and on the Band Apps. If you have not signed up for the Band App, please email Ms. Krieger at support@erhsband.com and she will help you.

We have launched a new web site! It can be found at http://www.erhsband.com. The Members Only page is password protected. The password can be found on the board in the band room. On this page, you can find links to all important documents, music, and resources. This will be a living document and anything you need to have will be linked here. Be sure to get the OCPS Medical Forms that are required, if you have not done so already. Students are REQUIRED by OCPS to have a physical and an ECG done in order to participate in marching band.

Well, that does it for me on this beautiful Sunday. I hope you all have a “better than terrific” week and I will see you on Tuesday!

Weekly Briefing – Week of May 1, 2022

Good evening, Falcon Vanguard Students & Families:

I am extremely proud of our Wind Ensemble students for earning an Excellent rating at the 2022 State Concert Band MPA. Our performance was extremely strong, and we represented our school very well.  Thanks also to our parent chaperones and all who came out to see the performance.

Band Fees Reminder: All band fees are past due. Please be sure to make payments ASAP for outstanding fees. Another gentle reminder that unpaid fees will follow you and prevent you from being able to participate in campus activities, including the Band Banquet and Graduation.  If you have any questions, please check your statement on Charms.

We have a LOT of testing coming up.  Please stay on top of the testing schedule.  SENIORS: I will be giving the make-up test for the Band CFA tomorrow during 1st period.  If you still need to take it, please make plans to come in.  If you need to take the 8th period CFE, you can do it then as well.

MATTRESS MAN FUNDRAISER! We are finishing up our spring fundraising by inviting The Mattress Man back to our campus! As a part of the fundraiser, he is going to give us a bonus for reaching certain goals and the first of those is having people you know text in and be a part of our event!

TEXT: Falcons to 321-521-2327

For every 100 people who text, we will receive a bonus of $500! The more people who text the code, the bigger our bonus!!  The actual event will occur on May 7th from 10 AM to 5 PM in the cafeteria. We hope you will join us.

The annual Band Awards Banquet will be held on Sunday, May 15th at River Run Church at 5:30 PM (doors open at 5 PM).  Tickets are on sale now at http://www.teachtix.com/erhs.   Tickets will be free for students and $25 for guests (plus applicable fees).  Semi-Formal dress is required for all attendees (no shorts, no jeans, no flip flops, no t-shirts).  Tickets must be purchased by May 6th.  All band fees must be paid in full before a student can attend the banquet.  Anyone who is applying for leadership must attend the banquet to be appointed to a position.

SPRING CONCERT SERIES: Tickets for the Orchestra Concert (May 4), Band Concert (May 5), and Jazz Concert (May 9) are now available on Teach Tix (see the link in the above paragraph).  Tickets are $5 each (plus applicable fees) and will be $7 (cash only) if you purchase them at the door.

Leadership Applications will be due TOMORROW.  Please make sure you pass out your two teacher recommendations as well.  Check the board for updates when your teachers turn them in to me.  Students should not be carrying completed recommendation forms.

IMPORTANT FOR 2022-23 VANGUARD MEMBERS: Medical forms that are being required by Orange County Public Schools are posted on the Band App. Physicals must be completed between May 1st and the first day of band camp (July 18). An ECG is required of all students. Students who have already had once done in your high school career do not need another one. All forms will be uploaded to a special program and all students must be cleared to participate by the Athletic Trainer. The physical hard copies should be brought to Mr. Venezio after you have uploaded them. If you require assistance with this or have any other questions, please feel free to see me.
