Timber Creek Girls Varsity Volleyball Team Against the Osceola Kowboys

With a 5-0 record in the regular season and a 9-4 overall record with tournament games, the Timber Creek Girls Varsity Volleyball team is not really accustomed to losing. But when this team does get knocked down, they are quick to get right back up again.

This was especially the case in their game against the Osceola Kowboys on Thursday, September 14th. Earlier in the season, the girls had fallen to the Kowboys in a tournament game 2-0. Now they were back with a vengeance.

“We wanted revenge and to defend our home court,” said senior Dionna Mitchell. These Lady Wolves came through with their revenge and ended up going home with a 25-13, 25-17, 25-19 victory over Osceola. Mitchell had a major part in this victory as she accounted for 9 of the team’s 34 total kills.

This outside hitter knew the importance of the game once it was finished. “It feels amazing [to win]! Everyone played a part in the win and we kept our composure through the adversity.”

“We had a different mindset going into this game that really helped us focus in and we stuck to the game plan Coach Jules prepared for us,” Mitchell explained, pointing out how this match differed from the previous one against the Kowboys.

Opposite hitter, senior Stevie Henderson, also played a key role in the win that night, accounting for 10 of the team’s 34 kills and 6 of the team’s 10 total blocks. “I think tonight at home with our student section really amped us up and helped us take the game and run with it.”

This game was a bit more personal for Henderson as she made a deal with her AP US Government teacher, Ms. Sinnadurai, over extra credit based on how well the team played.

“We made a deal with Ms. Sinnadurai that if we swept them in 3 straight sets our class got extra credit on the test.” This test was the Unit 1 test for the AP United States Government class and had a big impact on many students’ grades as students either did really well or really poorly on the multiple choice and free response sections of the test. “It feels amazing to get that extra credit. A bunch of us bombed the recent test and I know it helped everyone.”

Whether this game had an impact on players’ grades or not, it was acknowledged by everyone that this was an important one to win. “This game was personal and everyone stepped up,” Henderson said.

Perks of the Purple People. Senior Dionna Mitchell celebrates winning the point with her team. Mitchell believes celebration is important to the game and especially values the celebrations and spirit the fans bring to the gymnasium. ”I think our fan base is definitely an advantage, their cheers are awesome and help keep our momentum up during tough rallies!” Photo by Ava Stroshane
