In the halls of Timber Creek High School, one class stands out for its practicality and relevance in today’s digital age: Digital Information Technology (DIT). This course offers students a comprehensive exploration of various tech realms, from mastering software applications to delving into the intricacies of computer components and networking. Perspectives from Julianne Calcote, the dynamic DIT teacher, and Lilia Anaya, a 10th-grade student immersed in the course, uncover the mass benefits this class brings to the table.

Calcote, the driving force behind DIT at Timber Creek, sheds light on the invaluable skills her class imparts. “Students learn how to utilize different software applications like Microsoft and Google. They also gain insight into basic computer components, networking, social media, and information in a business setting like resumes, cover letters, and job interviews,” said Calcote. With her five years of experience in teaching DIT, Calcote brings not only technical expertise but also a passion for guiding students towards a tech-savvy future.

One of the class’s standout features is its hands-on approach. Anaya, in the midst of her DIT journey, explained, “My favorite part of DIT is being able to take the things we learn about and showcase it in our class lab assignments.” This approach allows students to apply their new acquired knowledge in real-world scenarios, solidifying their understanding and boosting their confidence in the tech world.

Moreover, DIT at Timber Creek opens doors to a world of opportunities. Calcote highlights, “Students have the ability to work one-on-one with the technology and have interactive labs that allow them to practice different features within technology.” The course also culminates in a Certification Exam at the end of the 3rd quarter, granting students college credits and a valuable credential for their future endeavors.

Anaya elaborates on the class structure, stating, “During a daily class day we learn about new and different parts of technology and sum it up in notes or another activity. To carry out what we learned we do weekly labs in class and go step by step to complete a real-life circumstance.” This combination of theoretical understanding and practical application ensures students leave the course not only with knowledge but with tangible skills they can use in a variety of settings.

In the ever-evolving landscape of technology, the DIT class at Timber Creek High School stands as a statement of practical education. With Calcote at the helm, students are empowered to navigate the digital world with confidence, armed with skills that are not only relevant but also indispensable in today’s tech-driven society. So, whether you’re a tech enthusiast or simply looking to enhance your digital prowess, DIT might just be the course to light your path.
