On March 30, 2017, the great pizza debate of the year was escalated by Gordon Ramsay claiming, “You don’t… put pineapples on pizza!” People immediately went to twitter to weigh in on whether or not Ramsey’s declaration ended the discourse once and for all in that pineapples do not belong on pizza, or if the chef was wrong. Gordon Ramsay has a reputation of not sugarcoating anything, however, this has made him a controversial figure. Pro-pineapple supporters utilized this to their advantage and would claim that his tastes weren’t on par with a normal person, or that he was stuck living in a classic pizza era. Since then, the internet has been full of articles and blogs defending pineapple on pizza, while other people explain why pineapple shouldn’t be on pizza.

Timber Creek students have voiced their own opinions on whether pineapples should go on pizza. Over the past week, students have been surveyed through the story feature on snapchat in which they can post their answer to the heated question. It was not a one-sided result, by only 9 votes, “no pineapple” won. The results show how split people are on this topic with such a small victory margin. A hand full of students that participated in the survey said that they had never tried pineapple on pizza and that factor combined with the popular vote shows the conservative tastes at Timber Creek.

Give Fruit the Boot! Offering a slice of pineapple pizza to junior Tatiana Cannizzaro, she immediately makes a disgusted face and feigns away from it. She wished that it was a thick-crusted slice of pepperoni instead. When asked about what she thinks of people who enjoy pineapple on pizza she exclaimed, “People who eat pineapple pizza should be banned from Earth!”

Although the majority of students think pineapple does not belong on pizza, there are still many others who think otherwise. Junior Thomas Acosta commented, “I love it because it’s two weird flavours that you would never expect to be together, that in turn, make pizza heaven.” The sweetness of the pineapple combined with the savory and sometimes salty (depending on what other toppings there might be) flavours are definitely a highlight for the pro-pineapple people. Typically, pineapple is found on pizza along with Canadian bacon to create “Hawaiian” pizza, creating a tropical paradise in the consumer’s mouth.

Regardless of the results of the poll, one thing remains clear; pineapples on pizza is still a major topic for discussion. Wherever someone may stand on the issue, it is important to remember that everyone has different tastes and likes different things. Remember, it’s always a safe option to just order cheese pizza.
