This year, Timber Creek Athletics is implementing a new way of recognizing our many outstanding student athletes. Each month, coaches will submit their nominations to the athletic department. Those nominations are then posted on the Timber Creek Athletic website, timbercreekathletics.com, where Timber Creek students, faculty and staff, as well as community members can vote on who they think should be selected.

The Student Athlete of the Month for October was awarded to senior, Jared Vazquez. Vazquez was the number one runner for Timber Creek’s Cross Country team this season. He helped lead the team to Metro, District, and Regional championships. Individually, Vazquez placed 3rd in Metro, 4th in District, and 7th in Regionals. Last month, the team also competed in the FHSAA Cross Country State Championship where he finished 7th.

Not only is Vazquez an accomplished runner, but he also strives to succeed academically. When asked how he balances the commitment that being a student athlete requires, Vazquez said, “Since running is a sport that requires a lot of dedication, I would put in a lot of hours and make sure I was practicing 5 times a weeks. I always would try to get all of my academic work finished during school hours and any time I had between working out. Even though at times it was tough I always made sure I excelled in both my academics and running.” Vazquez has been made several offers by a number of colleges but at this time he has not decided where he would like to pursue his degree. “I want to attend a college that’s going to make me a better athlete than I am now as well as one that’s going to help me pursue what I want for my future,” Vazquez said.

Vazquez is a great example of a standout student athlete, who through hard work and dedication has found success in the classroom as well as his sport.
