Everyone has had a best friend at one point or another, whether you have had only one in your whole life or a new one every year. But what does a best friend really mean? What does it mean to be someone’s best friend? Well, it really depends on who or what you’re asking. According to the dictionary, a best friend is “Someone a person’s closest to,” but is that how you would describe your best friend?

A best friend means a lot of different things to a lot of different people, for sophomore Eyota Powell a best friend is “Someone who is always there for you and is a non-toxic benefit for both, also someone who will do anything for you in any way.” Different people with different experiences see the term, “best friend,” in different ways. This is just one example of how one person sees it, for freshman Cindy Nguyen a best friend is “a person you are attached to. Someone you can’t live without and who feels like family.” She feels that a best friend is someone you can trust and open up to. But for sophomore Anisa Khalid a best friend is “Someone who I can trust and be 100% myself around. Someone who I can say absolutely anything without judgment while around them.” So is there really only one set definition for a “best friend”?

Everyone sees the term “Best Friend” differently, and everyone uses it differently. Some people have multiple best friends while others only have one, Eyota Powell has two, while Cindy Nguyen and Anisa Khalid have 3 to 4. There is no perfect definition to what a “best friend” means, a “best Friend” is different and unique to everyone. It could be someone you trust with your secrets. It could be someone you hang out with every day. It could be someone you can be yourself around. It could be that one person that gets you. Or it can be just someone you sat at lunch with. But the point is that a “best friend” can mean anything to anyone, because a “best friend” means a lot of things to a lot of different people. So no matter definition you go by, it’s true. Because a “best friend” is whatever you feel it is.
