How Timber Creek Students Spent Their Summer

By Gabrielle Nash

Summer is easily the most anticipated season for most students. It is generally considered the “best time” of the year because students do not have to wake up at early hours, complete homework, or stress over standardized tests. This time of freedom usually encompasses various adventures throughout the world and exciting activities with peers and family. Each student spends their summer participating in different events that they find relevant to their personal agenda or schedule. Although this summer did appear a bit differently due to the national pandemic (COVID-19), students at Timber Creek were still able to travel and experience new objectives.

Before beginning her freshman year of high school, freshman Mya Rodriguez traveled to California to expand upon her dance journey. She participated in a dance camp that lasted roughly a week working with some of the best choreographers and teachers. Rodriguez accounts the experience by saying, “This summer I went to California as a belated trip for my brother’s birthday. We went for about eight or nine days and spent our time participating in a dance intensive, driving out to beaches, shopping, and trying new restaurants.” Rodriguez excitedly restates her wonderful experience with friends and family throughout California. There are various places to visit and sightsee in California, which makes the state rather exciting.

Similarly, senior Sam Castro spent her summer before senior year traveling outside of the United States to Spain. The Spanish country has beautiful pieces of architecture and a vibrant culture. Castro explains, “My favorite part of going to Spain was experiencing another very different culture and meeting new people!” Although there are Spaniards who embrace their culture in the United States, it is a different opportunity getting to visit the native country. Spain has a lot to offer, and it is so exciting that Castro was able to visit. This was a wonderful way for Castro to experience her last summer as a high school student.

Moreover, senior Faith Wix traveled to Alabama for a special volunteer trip with her other peers. Wix states, “This summer I went on a trip to Tuskegee, Alabama and served the community for a week. Over the course of the week, we were able to repair a deck for an elderly woman. Although we worked hard all week, we also got to have some fun by going white water rafting on the last day! Oh, I forgot to mention we did all of this without having our phones!”  This trip was a great way for Wix to give back to the community, while also getting to experience new activities. Helping within the community is really important, and as a rising senior this was a wonderful way for Wix to appreciate her last high school summer.

Summer is an exhilarating time for a multitude of students, and several Timber Creek kids had the opportunity to explore the country and world. Although there were challenges surrounding COVID-19, our Timber Creek wolves were still able to actively enjoy their summer with the required safety precautions. High school is a short period of time, and it is important that students get the chance to appreciate each and every day. Whether someone’s summer was spent saving money, taking care of siblings, traveling the country, or hanging out with friends, there is still enthusiasm about a break from the school year.

Welcome back students!
