Fourth Grade August / September Newsletter

Welcome Back!!!!!

Fourth grade is going to have a fabulous year.  There are many changes that have taken place over the summer.  The first change is that fourth grade is some of the teachers will be departmentalizing this year.  Mrs. Luddy will be teaching English language arts while Mrs. Novak will be teaching math, science, and social studies. The second change for our students is that the fourth grade students will take both the language arts and math FSA tests on the computer. Students will be required to complete problems that are written responses, will have problems that have more than one answer, will have to show their work, fill in charts, and they will even have to highlight where in a text they found their answers. We will still have launch.ocps.net.  This is where students can log in to find all of their textbooks.  They have a username (student ID#) and the password is their birthday (YYYYMMDD).  When students log in to this website they can visit Thinkcentral for math, science, and reading/language arts.  They can also visit iReady from this site.

In English language arts students will be learning about identifying key ideas and details in a fictional and informative text, text structures, unwrapping prompts, coming up with controlling idea statements, and planning for writing. In math students will be focusing on place value, addition and subtraction of multi-digit numbers, multiplication of four digit by one digit numbers, multiplication of two digit by two digit numbers, and dividing numbers with one digit divisors. In science we begin with scientific methods and processes.  Then we will discuss earth (including rock cycles) and space. Lastly, in social studies we will begin our journey into Florida history by learning about early Florida and its people.  Part of our focus will be on St. Augustine.

Open house is going to be on September 14th from 5:00 p.m to 7:00 p.m.  Please come out to find out more about fourth grade and our expectations.  Should you ever have any questions or concerns please e-mail Mrs. Luddy at patricia.luddy@ocps.net or Mrs. Novak at stephanie.novak@ocps.net.  If we work together, all of our students will have a successful year!
