As the school year comes to an end , that means only one thing is around the corner… Culture Day!! Culture Day is  an event sponsored by Timber Creeks Black Student Union, Ebony Club; Culture Day is meant to bring awareness of other heritages present at our school. Ebony Club works with other ethnic clubs including Hispanic club, Muslim Student Association, Latinos in Action, and Chinese Club. This event is scheduled to be held a week before senior exams on April 19th in the courtyard. It will consist of booths each representing countries around the world, music, food, games, trivia, performances, and a runway, all packed together to make a fun filled educational experience where students can leave learning a little something new.

Culture day is a significant event for the school; it is a day meant to honor ALL around the school. This day is meant to be a day of unity, fun, and learning, which promotes culture and arts simultaneously. One of the major goals for the day is  to educate and enlighten our students to the various cultures represented in our school, encouraging more open conversations about the importance of heritage while promoting diversity. Every year this event is held to make students aware of the world outside of their own. With the pressure of finishing out the year strong students tend to get lost in the midst of it all. Culture day gives students a well needed break and a mini trip around the world.

The set of for culture day goes that each country is given a booth where they have a tri-fold, snacks, and games. The tri-fold  consists of pictures relating to the country and a quick overview of information that students from that country think people should know about. Snacks bought at each booth are ethnically unique to that country and are all prepackaged meaning if a student liked what they tasted they could probably precoure it locally. Then the games at the booth can range from something physical like ping pong or more strategic like trivia (based on information from tri-fold). But at the beginning each country walks down the runway waving their flag with their cultures music playing in the background. Giving students an easy opportunity to see what countries they can look more into throughout the rest of lunch. At the end of the event there will be a special performance from both Latinos in Action and Ebony Club Stepp Team.

This is not the first time this event has been held, it has been a recurring tradition that Ebony Club hosts an event like this for the student body. With slight changes made every year Ebony Club members are always looking for something to improve. This year the addition of the runway has never been implemented but according to current Ebony club president Amore Lewis “ We added the runway so all the countries represented could be more evenly displayed so students can get a feel of what they want to learn more about and where to find it” said Lewis. Trying to make the event more of a hit year after year, Ebony Club vice president Sofia Joseph cherishes why she loves the event and puts on the work every year. “I think my favorite part would have to be everyone gathering and showing out. It was the first time I’ve seen the school so unified (it was my first time being on campus since covid) but it was amazing to see. I loved how people who I didn’t even know personally, shared something very similar to me,” said Joseph. The unity this day creates is a feeling that most students will take with them after the event, a sense that they are seen and knowing that there are more similarities that unite us rather than divide us.

Planning Stages. Ebony Club members meet and discuss plans for culture day before asking for the cooperation of other clubs. Creating the set list of countries they will choose to represent they work on perfecting the event.  Photo by Amore Lewis.
