As the sun started rising above the clouds, 200 students gathered in the courtyard ready to help make the campus a cleaner place.
Each March, the Student Government Association organizes Green Up Boone to beautify the campus. Each official club on campus has a designated plot they are supposed to clean.
“I believe [Green Up Boone] is great because we get to make Boone look better, but more importantly it allows students to take ownership in the Boone community,” Student Body vice president Wesley Harper, junior, said.
At 7:30 a.m. Saturday, March 15, over 30 clubs’ members gathered in front of the media center to sign in and await instruction. SGA provided participants donuts and water, and the City of Orlando provided all of the landscaping supplies such as gloves, shovels, clippers, mulch, garbage bags and wheel barrels.
Around 8 a.m. club advisers started rounding up their members and gathered supplies to begin picking up trash, weeding and re-mulching their designated area.
In less than five hours, the club members cleared the campus of trash, weeds, and over-grown bushes and trees.
“I felt good to be giving back to my school because I get so much from it,” junior Katelin England said.
Students who worked 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. received four hours of community service from SGA.
