As the weekend approaches, The Second City, an improvisational comedy group, from Chicago takes the stage at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, with special guest, Alexander Cumming. The Second City, a starting point for comedians like Tina Fey, Joan Rivers and Stephen Colbert, continues to influence
the comedy world. Since the debut in 1959, the group became a source of cast members for Saturday Night Live.
Invited to The Second City after performing in an improv show in September, senior Alexander Cumming participated in The Second City Improv Workshop.
“It was exhilarating because working with professionals who are doing what I like to do really gets my comedic juices flowing and keeps me motivated,” Cumming said.
Working with The Second City provides Cumming an opportunity to take his comedic style to the next level. Comedian Phil Hartman and the Saturday Night Live cast, past and present shape his style.
“My favorite part of working with [The Second City] includes seeing the professional environment and the comedy boost it gives me to drive me closer to my goals,” Cumming said.
In his spare time, Cumming performs improv and stand-up comedy around Orlando. He also writes satirical articles. Involved in the theatre department, Debate Club, Brave TV and Young Democrats, Cumming rarely takes a break. Students immediately recognize him for his animated personality.
“Most people know me as the Brave TV kid, but I’m more than just a funny face, I’m a funny guy,” Cumming said.
After college, Cumming plans on moving to Chicago to pursue a career in comedy and performing arts. He hopes to perform comedy to mass audiences or become a cast member of Saturday Night Live.
Cumming and The Second City group will perform at The Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts on Friday Oct.14 and Saturday Oct. 15 at 8 p.m. Tickets for Friday’s show cost $35; Saturday’s show is sold out.
