Tears dripped down faces onto the purple shirts proudly worn by survivors.  Others cheered as they walked the survivor lap.  After hosting a Relay for Life raised over $50,000 in May 2010, the American Cancer Society made Boone High School a Relay for Life School.  With 74 days left until the 2011 relay, it is time for the kick-off.

On Feb. 8, from 6:30-7:30 p.m., in the Conway Middle School Media Center, current teams and all those interested in the fundraiser are encouraged to attend the kick-off meeting.  It will include an ice breaker, refreshments, a raffle and all the necessary information to sign up as a team or participant.

Relay for Life is an over night event to raise money for cancer research, cancer prevention and providing treatment as explained in their motto “Celebrate, Remember, Fight Back.”  The night of the event, teams set up tents with fundraisers and have at least one member from each team walk the track all night.

“It is community service and it makes a difference in cancer research,” Committee Vice Chair, junior Corrine Grothe said.  “It makes me feel like I am making a difference.”

On April 8, all clubs are expected to participate, however teams are not limited to school clubs.  For more information, or to sign up a team, survivor or participant, visit relayforlife.org/conwayfl.
