Katie Sowers, an offensive coach with the San Francisco 49ers will be the first woman and the first openly gay coach to coach in a Super Bowl on Feb. 2.

The 49ers play the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday night, in Miami, at 6:30 p.m.

Sowers, a graduate from the University of Central Missouri, is currently participating in her fourth season in the NFL, and her second with the 49ers.

“The more we can create an environment that welcomes all types of people, no matter their race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, the more we can help ease the pain and burden that many carry every day,” Sowers told Outsports.com after the 2017 promotion.

Sowers always wanted to be an NFL coach and dreamt of one day being a head coach. In a Microsoft Surfaces commercial, Sowers shares a journal entry from when she was younger, stating “she hopes to one day be a good football player.”

Sowers gained most of her football experience from playing in the Woman’s Football Alliance for eight years.

Sowers’s monumental step in the football world makes a great chance to inspire others to pursue their dreams and not let obstacles standing in their way.
