Here to Stay?

America is best known as the “land of opportunity.”

Every year millions try to find their place in this, the home of the free, where everyone is entitled to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Many flee their homes with whatever they can carry and their children hoping to achieve the American dream.

Under Barack Obama’s presidency, the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals commonly referred to as DACA was founded in 2012.

The program was established to protect eligible immigrants who came to America as a youth from deportation. This group of individuals became known as the Dreamers.

The current administration has expressed the desire and taken actions to remove the DACA program.

It remains unclear what program will be replacing DACA if any at all.

The removal of the DACA program has sparked wide media coverage as well as community protest.

Dreamers and those who stand behind them took to the streets to rally against the decision. Student organizations at Berkeley University, as well as other, have scheduled walkout to protest the administration’s actions.

Sophomore Ismael Cadoo was saddened to hear about the removal of DACA program and said “I think it’s unfair, those kids didn’t try to come here and now this is their home and they’re expected to start over somewhere else? That’s not right.”

Cadoo hopes that if the DACA program is removed it’s replaced by a similar program or, at the very least, those who are currently under its protection are not deported.

Until decisions are made Dreamers and anyone currently under protection are urged to keep themselves informed and update all forms while the DACA program is still going.
