As the sun rises on Saturday Feb. 4, volunteers will raise the banner for the fourth annual 5K Reservation Run, marking the start of the race.

The event starts and ends on the football field; runners head west on Harding Street through Delaney Park and back to campus via Summerlin Avenue.  Traffic will be blocked in this area to accommodate the runners.

Registration opens at 6:30 a.m., the timed race officially starts at 7:30 a.m. and the awards ceremony begins at 9:30 a.m.  Fifty percent of the money raised goes towards a cause of the choice of the runner, and the other half goes to support Boone High School Athletic Association projects such as the preservation of the school’s athletic facilities.  BHSAA hopes to attract 1000 runners and will award prizes to teams based on the number of participants and the amount of money raised.

“The run was started to provide the clubs and teams a way to raise money.  That’s what’s so unique about the run; it’s an opportunity for runners to raise money for their own cause,” BHSAA member Karen Smith said.

Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children and the Orlando Utilities Commission were Braveheart sponsors for the run, and various businesses in the area also contributed to the cause through sponsorships and donations.

“We have 18 businesses that sponsor to pay for the race, which is really expensive to put on.  The race also gives businesses and neighbors the opportunity to participate in an event at the high school,” Smith said.

The Bravettes took advantage of the opportunity to raise money towards their club, and attracted sponsors, such as Spear sponsor Dr. Gregory Reddish, so they could get a portion of the donations.  Their goal was to register 120 runners under their name.

“We don’t get funded from the school, so to pay for the uniforms, competitions and banquets, the Reservation Run is a quick and easy way to raise money,” junior Britanny Hope, Bravette said.
