To ensure as many as possible local kids in need get a present for the holidays, Key Club members helped Kiwanis Club, a community service based organization, build over 170 bikes on Saturday, Dec. 13, at their annual bike build.

“[The most rewarding part was] being able to do something to help kids,” senior Damariz Castillo, Key Club officer, said.

Unlike previous years, when Key Club volunteers were there mainly as support and clean up crew, this time they had the responsibility of actively building the bikes alongside Kiwanis members.

“They did outstanding, I am so happy with them,” Kelly Morales, Key Club sponsor, said.

Volunteers were able to see the immediate affect their actions had on families in need by giving them to anyone who came to receive a bike.  Though some bikes were distributed at the event, the majority will be passed out to elementary students through their school’s Safety Programs.

“There was a couple who came to pick up three bikes for their seven adopted children and these were the first bikes they’d ever had,” Morales said.

Though some bikes were distributed at the event, most will be passed out to elementary students through their school’s Safety Programs.  Anyone still interested in helping this cause is encouraged to donate to Kiwanis Club to fund future projects or participate in the bike race.  For future information on the bike race, students can visit Kiwanis Club of South Orlando’s Facebook page or see Kelly Morales in room 230.
