One thing the holidays are known for is ugly Christmas sweaters. Today, students and teachers are encouraged to wear their ugly sweaters to school, as a way to spread the holiday spirit.
“Personally, I think wearing ugly sweaters is a grand tradition that everyone should partake in,” sophomore Diego Salisbury said.
Both photography teacher John Burke and Young Collins think a couple hundred students will wear an ugly Christmas sweater.
Christmas sweaters made their mark in the 1980s, but they started to fade out by the 1990s. Then at the start of the new century, more and more people started wearing ugly sweaters in jest, which reignited the trend. The trend gave people a reason to buy such sweaters and wear them proudly. People everywhere started to celebrate this Christmas apparel tradition by throwing ugly Christmas sweater parties or events.
“It’s fun and it shows Christmas spirit,” junior Kaitlyn Collins said. “I like them because it’s just a goofy thing to do, and it’s something to look forward to. It gets people excited for Christmas.”
SGA encourages everyone to show off their ugly sweaters to all of their classmates and friends.
“I like it because it’s fun and shows your personality, and you’re not worried about people judging you,” photography teacher John Burke said. “They are really disarming.”
There are a variety of places to find ugly Christmas sweaters like Goodwill, Walmart or a variety of online retailers dedicated solely to the ugly sweater, like TipsyElves, who has a vast selection. There is always the opportunity to make homemade Christmas sweaters using, festive things from around the house or from a craft store.
”When people get together wearing Christmas sweaters they are getting together, which is the meaning of Christmas,” Burke said.
