Senior Huong Dang’s drive to become a valedictorian sprouted from one simple goal, to be “part of the top academic group at Boone.”

While being a valedictorian was always a goal, Dang did not accomplish it without hardships.  She admitted that her least valedictorian-like quality is that she “complains too much.”  While her complaints were often about the workload, she would ultimately get all of the assignments completed.

Most nights Dang spent her time doing 10 or more hours of homework. Her toughest challenge, in fact, was going sleepless on many nights in order to complete the mountains of homework she faced. This is a feat only the most dedicated of students can accomplish.

“Have a lot of tears. Be ready to persevere through 10 or more hours of homework a night. To become valedictorian, you’re going to have a lot of mental breakdowns, but what’s most important is to do your homework despite that,” Dang said.

This does not mean, however, that she does not struggle with classes. Her hardest class is AP Physics C: Mechanics.

“I’m passing the class but I don’t think I will pass the exam… so I don’t know,” Dang said.

On of Dang’s greatest accomplishments in high school was her participation in the Bank of America Student Leaders program, a summer program that shapes bright minds of the future and only accepts the absolute best students to participate each year.  Also, she created the Empowerment Club to help give people who feel voiceless a chance to be heard.

Dang’s one piece of advice is like that of any good teacher: “Do your homework. Only seniors, kind of, get the chance to not do homework. Kind of.”

Dang is going to attend the University of Central Florida, to major in electrical engineering so that she can be financially secure and stable for the future.
