breastcancerBreast Cancer Awareness fundraising organizations schedule events in an annual campaign to raise money for research.

Sports teams, local franchises and hospitals wear pink throughout the month of October to support breast cancer victims.

The softball and football team wear pink shirts and tape during practices and games to show their solace. For the Oct. 21 Winter Park game, the Athletic Training club will accept donations to tape athletes in pink. They will donate all funds to the American Cancer Society.

“I think the activities are good for raising awareness,” senior Adrian Castaneda said. “It’s important because it shows support and acknowledges that they aren’t alone.”

Restaurants around Orlando, donate a percentage of procedes of pink products to local organizations. Panera shifts their bagels into a ribbon shaped treat and every time someone buys one they support the cause.

Making Strides of Orlando will host a walk at Lake Eola Sunday, Oct. 29. They do not charge registration fees or minimum donation amounts and people of all ages can participate.

Other charities accepting donations to fight breast cancer: National Breast Cancer Foundation, Breast Cancer Action and Susan G Komen.

“It’s not an old people’s disease or a women only disease,” Orlando Health medical assistant Susan Rodriguez said.

In 2016, Breastcancer.org estimates 246,660 women and 2,600 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer. Research is the first step to help doctors learn more about breast cancer and finding a cure.
