On Wednesday, Jan. 20, the Braves boys wrestlers defeated the Bishop Moore Hornets on their senior night.
Before celebrating seniors, the boys junior varsity team took on their competition starting with freshman Seth Downey. After a tough fight, Downey’s opponent pinned him, giving the Hornets the first win of the night.
The next four matches followed this pattern. Jhonathan Wright lost a tough match, 0-8. The JV team lost all of their matches for the night.
After honoring seniors, the varsity team prepared to take on their competition. Sophomore Adam Renish earned his team the first win of the night by pinning his opponent.
Following Renish, sophomore Kaleb Downey won his match, 7-2, leaving the Braves with an overall score of 30-22.
Keeping up the winning streak, senior Lucas Rodriguez crushed his competitor 19-2, but junior Andrew Fletcher lost his match, 3-7.
Junior Jordan Gates followed with a difficult match. The match was close to an end when Gates fought back and pinned his opponent, shocking the crowd.
In the next match, senior Grant Linnemann faced a tough competitor, but he fell to his opponent, 0-16.
However, the game was not over yet. Senior Gage VanKuilenburg finished the team off strong winning, 8-3. Unfortunately, his opponent suffered an injury as a result of the match.
The crowd fell silent as the player’s teammates surrounded him on what seemed to be a wrist injury. After three minutes, he stood up and the announcer confirmed the Brave’s win.
Overall, the Braves won the meet 47-30.
The wrestling teams will compete next on Wednesday, Jan. 25 at Colonial High School.
