On April 16, the boys volleyball team (7-11) defeated the Oak Ridge Pioneers (12-9) on senior night. After losing the first set 22-25, the boys rallied and won the next three sets to add a win to their record.

The first set began with an ace from Karl Schaefer, with another from Blake Garrison a few points later. One of two seniors, Luis Lezcano registered a kill to tie the score at 9-9. The Pioneers slowly slipped ahead, but met resistance after the boys went on a three-point scoring streak to bring the score within two, 22-24. Oak Ridge scored the last point.

In the second set, kills from Daniel Hermida and Dominick Orlando gave the boys an early lead. Hermida and Orlando each had three kills for the night. Late in the game, Lezcano served his only ace of the night and increased the lead to 21-11. After a small comeback from Oak Ridge, a kill from Hermida ended the game, 25-20,

The third game, junior Jon Bartelt, Schaefer and Orlando suppressed the Oak Ridge offense with outstanding blocks. Garrison also made a kill to increase the early lead. Garrison led the team’s offense with 11 kills. Jason Hock also contributed to the team’s success with eight kills. The boys won by a comfortable margin, 25-13.

In the fourth and final set, junior Nicholas Duffy and senior Zachary Allen’s defensive play allowed Schaefer to assist Bartelt in getting kills. Bartelt had 10 kills total. The fourth set ended 25-22.

The boys take on the Bishop Moore Hornets, April 21, at 7 p.m. in the Wayne Rickman Gymnasium.
