The girls varsity volleyball team faced off against the Colonial Grenadiers on Tuesday.
The team started the night off strong with a five-point lead in the first set. Freshmen Sam Shaffer and Zoe Talabong cranked up the heat at the start of the game. Shaffer got the first major point of the match, which was a right side block and Talabong had two outside kills.
Other standout players were junior Emily Harrison and senior Ashlynn Daley who dominated the net with their blocks and kills throughout the set.
The team moved swiftly into the second set after winning the first with a 10 point lead. Senior Alayna Fennell played hard, resulting in two points from a kill and a smart tip to the middle. Talabong increased the lead to six points from another one of her outside kills at the end of the set. The team finished the second set strong with a score of 25-17, only to fall to Colonial in the third set. When the girls were behind during this set, senior Lillian Baker got a four-point service run and fought hard to catch up to the Grenadiers.
As the fourth set began, Daley gained points on her kills, bringing the Braves to a five point lead early on. Once Shaffer and Harrison got back on the court, this lead kept rising. Shaffer continued to rack up points from her right side swings. Baker had a slight service run, getting two aces. All of this contributed to the significant lead the team experienced throughout the fourth set.
The Lady Braves closed the match with a 3-1 win. Catch the team at their next game against Apopka tonight at 7 p.m.
