How to improve your vocabulary

Reading a variety of texts is one of the most effective ways for fifth graders to increase their vocabulary. When you read, you encounter unfamiliar vocabulary words and you are often able to use context to figure out the meaning. Over time, your vocabulary will grow. There are other ways to improve your understanding of new words.  Below are a few ways you can work on your own to do just that.

Learning the Parts of Words

A solid way for you to understand new words on sight is by studying common roots, prefixes and suffixes. You can use this knowledge to figure out the meanings of unfamiliar words. Print lists of word roots that you can find on the internet and work on few new roots each week. Hang a small whiteboard in your bedroom and write out the new word parts each week to review.

Studying Word Lists

You can also ask your parent or a friend to quiz you on weekly vocabulary lists. You can compile your own word lists from fifth grade vocabulary lists online.  Here are a few sites:

When you use the list, create your own dictionary by logging into your school account and making a copy of this Personal Dictionary by clicking on this link: Personal Dictionary Use it to add new words and their meaning.  Study the words. Use the words in your writing and when you talk.  Using new words is the way to learn them.

The Internet is a useful resource when it comes to practicing vocabulary. Many sites offer pre-made quizzes, tests and worksheets based on fifth grade core vocabulary standards. You can find free vocabulary games focusing on everything from word structure to synonyms, antonyms and homophones.
