After a half a decade the Indie rock band Cold War Kids proves once again that different doesn’t always mean bad. With Nathan Willett’s raw voice their new album Mine is Yours gives a sense of roughness and unhinged sound.
This is the Kids third consecutive album following their first Robbers and Cowards and Loyalty to Loyalty (2008).
Jacquire King, the producer behind the Kings of Leon, had a hand in this album. It becomes obvious after listening to “Royal Blue”. The storytellers change from preachy to a typical love song. The tracks “Louder than Ever” and “Finally Begins” have a Vampire Weekend sound with captivating choruses. Their new endeavored sound by Jacquire King appeals to a larger audience driven by the guitar riff in “Broken Open”.
“Sensitive Kid” comes closest to their old sound with Willett’s wondering vocals and eccentric keys. It tells a story about a broken family who’s lost their love for one another. It becomes vey obvious in the chorus which says, “They sold the house, left the photo album, no silverware while paper walls were bare. I called all my friends, ‘Come over! Come one, come all!’ ‘Let’s get a crowd here for one last horrah!’”
Although the Cold War Kids have been getting hit hard from the critics with their change of sound, the album is still satisfying and unique.
