With participation from the student body, each year non perishable grocery products are given to the WESH News Channel 2’s “Share Your Christmas” food drive benefiting the Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida.

“[This canned food drive] helps get classes and clubs together because we do a competition between [them]. When you see how much food you get and you see all the volunteers, it always make you feel warm inside. I can’t describe it without getting all cheesy,” government teacher Annette Montgomery said.

Yet, before the donations of cans go to the donation drop offs, SGA weighs each can and tallies the weight and packaged before drop off day.

“My role is to supervise the collection of cans [and] make sure they are weighed. I feel since we are in a leadership position, it’s our job to really give back to the community,” Student Government Association advisor Cassandra Stilwell said.

Last year, SGA collected 6,000 pounds of canned food for families in the community, and hope to beat that this December.

“[Our] goal for this canned food drive is to raise food for people who need food for their families during the holidays. Also, it’s a good way to bring our students to work together [for a common cause],” committee chair of the canned food drive Vicky Lam said.

The canned food drive ends on Dec. 12.
