With March Madness right around the corner, there is no clear number one ranked team in college basketball this year. With one full week left, known as ‘Bracket Builder Week’, teams are looking for a big win and a possible bid into the NCAA Tournament.
In the 2012-2013 season the number one team has lost a total of six times. The recent loss by a number one team was on Tuesday, Feb. 27, as the Minnesota Golden Gophers hosted the number one ranked Indiana Hoosiers. Despite that loss the Hoosiers are still projected to be a number one seed in the tournament along with the Duke Blue Devils, the Gonzaga Bulldogs and the Florida Gators.
Those seedings are not set in stone, because in college basketball anything is possible.
For example the No. 8 Florida Gators traveled to Knoxville, Tennessee, to take on the Tennessee Volunteers who needed a quality win for a bid into the tournament. The Volunteers came up with a 64-58 victory over a top 10 team.
At the end of the day it all depends on the conference tournaments. The winner of any of the power six conferences (Big Ten, ACC, SEC, Pac-12, Big East and Big 12) get an automatic bid into the tournament along with the runner-up of said conference.
Before March Madness arrives there are still big games left to be played. On Saturday, Mar. 2, No. 5 Miami (FL) Hurricanes travel to take on No. 3 Duke which should decide who is the favorite in the ACC; and No. 12 Syracuse Orange host No. 10 Louisville Cardinals in a matchup that should be the deciding factor for the Big East Tournament Champion.
I think the four No. 1 seeds will consist of the Indiana Hoosiers (24-3), the Gonzaga Bulldogs (27-2), the Miami (FL) Hurricanes (22-4) and the Duke Blue Devils (24-3).
Selection Sunday is on March 17 broadcasted on CBS Sports at .
