With a constant drizzle coming from the sky, the girls’ flag football team ran to their positions and waited for the Winter Park team to put the ball in play. As the ball traveled through the air, senior Bailey Florin read the ball and intercepted it, running into the end zone, leading the team toward district finals.
As the first quarter progressed, the girls’ defense remained strong and helped the offense obtain more play time, which led the team to a 13-point lead as they entered the second quarter. After Florin scored her first touchdown for the night, she threw a touchdown pass to freshman Emily Colvin.
The second quarter started with Florin throwing another touchdown pass to sophomore Cassandra Ketchum, who then scored again five minutes later, bringing the score to 25-0. Junior Sabdie Alvarado received the extra point pass from Florin. After five more minutes, sophomore Jenna Chastain scored another touchdown for the team, making the score 32-0 at the half.
Beginning the third quarter, senior Alexis Washington sacked the quarterback, who then threw an interception that Colvin caught. The Braves gained possession and Florin ran for a touchdown and passed to sophomore Megan Gibson for the extra point, 39-0.
With the final minutes counting down, Florin ran to score the final touchdown and the extra point, ending the game 46-0.
The girls play on the Reservation Wednesday, April 24 at 7 p.m. against Jones High School for the district championship.
