Kiyah Costin is one of 27 valedictorians.

What college do you plan to attend? “Virginia Tech.”

What is your intended major? “Animal and Poultry Science.”

What other colleges have accepted you? “Cornell University, North Carolina A&T State University, North Carolina State University, University of Florida, Colorado State University, University of Georgia, and Purdue University.”

What clubs and sports did you participate in? “Varsity Girls Lacrosse, Quiz Bowl, Animal Aid and Awareness club, Criminal Justice Command Staff, Black Student Union, National Honor Society, Science National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society, Social Studies National Honor Society.”

What is your favorite memory from Boone? “Winning District Runner-Up in the Lacrosse District Tournament.”

What is your advice for incoming students? “Participate in extracurriculars because that’s where you can define who you are on campus and make like-minded friends.”

What are you most looking forward to about college? “I am most looking forward to meeting all kinds of different people and getting to define who I really am.”

What was the biggest challenge you faced at school? “The biggest challenge I faced was time management and balancing school and a social life. Eventually I found a balance where I could hang out with a few close friends but am also able to focus on school.”

How did your experience being so involved in the school help you succeed academically? “I was able to form many connections throughout the campus because of my heavy involvement in campus activities. You can’t succeed academically on your own so having those connections helped me get to where I am today.”

What is your biggest goal for the next year? “My biggest goal is to have fun and figure out what life I want to lead on my own, all while staying focused on my future as a veterinarian.”

Who is your biggest inspiration? “My biggest inspiration is probably my family. All of my family members, not just my parents, have stood by me and encouraged me to pursue excellence in everything that I do. My family has inspired me to achieve my dreams by working hard.”

What will you miss most about Boone? “I’m going to miss the people that I have met that have made my experience at Boone so amazing. The friends that I’ve made and the faculty at Boone have helped shape me into who I am today and have made my time at Boone even more meaningful.”
