As fall arrives, the theater department prepares for its upcoming musical, Songs for A New World. Technical Director, junior Megan Smith manages the off-stage preparations.
“Being technical director pushes me to do things I haven’t before. It makes me a better person because of all I learn. It also makes me feel good because I know I am putting my heart and soul into the show,” Smith said.
Songs musically portray the struggles characters in the musical overcome. Seven actors play 11 to 12 characters each that have individual storylines. With no distinct time period or setting, the variety of hardships characters face appeals to multiple audiences.
“Everyone can relate to it. There is a song, there is a moment, there is something in this musical for everyone. It is a really unique experience because not many musicals are like that,” Smith said.
Smith’s theater background includes more than tech. Smith started acting in her church and school at about five years old. Her graduated sister, Abigail Smith, inspired her to join Troupe 1139. In middle school, Smith met the troupe when she helped pass out food to the drama department.
“There is something amazing about this troupe. Everyone is really caring and we are like a family. We aren’t exclusive. If someone wants to join, we are like, “Heck ya! Come join, be a part of our family.” It is a really cool experience,” Smith said.
Smith’s peers teach her invaluable skills that she hopes to use in her future. The influence of friends in leadership positions guide Smith to sharpen her own skills.
“Some of my friends taught me what it takes to be a good leader. I need to know how to control a room, talk to people one-on-one, talk to a crowd and be personable,” Smith said.
Teachers Andrew Castle and Nadine Love teach real-world skills that theater students apply to run the theater department. Smith can manage teams, use tools, build sets, work light boards and run sound boards. Smith appreciates the skills she is learning now because they leave her ample opportunities for future jobs.
“I learned how to work with other people, how to work in groups, and how to be a good leader. I have learned a lot on how to be a better leader because of [other student leaders], and that is something I can take with me all the way through life. I learn something new every single day from [my peers, Ms. Love and Mr. Castle],” Smith said.
Songs for A New World premiers Thursday, Oct. 13, at 7 p.m. General admission tickets are $10 and VIP tickets including dessert and priority seating are $20.
