In their game against Oak Ridge on March 29, the baseball team fell short, 3-6.
At the top of the first inning, senior pitcher Jacob Shumsky struck out the first pitcher. Senior Howard Rodriguez finished the top of the first inning when he made a double play, keeping the score 0-0. As the first pitcher at the bottom of the first inning, senior Christopher Jones made it to first base, and later stole second base. Sophomore Edgar Alvarez advanced the game with a walk to first base, while Jones stole third base. With help from their teammates, Jones slid home while Alvarez stole second and third base to later run to home. The first inning ended, 2-0.
At the top of the second inning, senior Josias Ridley caught a fly ball, ending the Pioneers at bat. As the team switched to batting, senior Garrett Stillwell hit a ball deep into center field, but a Pioneer caught it. The second inning ended without either team scoring. The game remained 2-0.
Shumsky started the third inning with consistent pitching, but fell short when the Pioneers scored two runs, which tied the game, 2-2. As the bottom of the third inning, Rodriguez put up a good fight, but in the end, struck out. Junior Jack Dixson hit a pop fly, and Jones followed with his batting which advanced him to third base. Despite their efforts, the boys were shut down when the Pioneers struck out the remaining batters.
In the fourth inning, the team failed to score, with all three batters striking out. The Pioneers scored one run, advancing the score to 2-3.
Dixson started the fifth inning, making it to third base. Senior Noah Chevalier followed hitting a ground ball and Dixson ran home, tying the score, 3-3.
The seventh inning ended with neither team scoring.
In the eighth inning, the Pioneers scored three runs. Despite their efforts, the team failed to score, ending the game 3-6.
The boys’ next game is Friday, March 31 at 4 p.m. at Oak Ridge.
