Entering the newly built Edgewater Gymnasium, the wrestlers prepared to face a team with a strong reputation.

“I’m trying to make [wrestling against Edgewater] as important as football.  [This meet] is very important, as important as football,” coach Michael Willis said.  “Edgewater has been one of the tops programs.  [If] we want to be the best then we have to beat the best.”

The team gained an early lead with a score of 20-6 after just four matches.

“We were not expecting to do as well as we did,” junior Lee Hagood-James said.

Although they continued to win three more matches, Edgewater won four and gained more points for moves.  Boone also had to forfeit the 119, 160 and 189 weight classes, awarding the Eagles another eighteen points.

“We were really excited and had a lot of good momentum and we kind of slipped up at the end,” Hagood-James said.

The team finished with a 35-42 loss.  The next meet in Jan. 7, in the Boone gym.
