On a road trip marked by a tough loss and a shutout win, the football team traveled to University for a 26-10 win Friday night. Suffering losses in their first two games, the team has battled back to an even 2-2 on the year.
Quarterback Thomas Verzi III hit senior Riley Bell for an early touchdown halfway through the first quarter on a 30-yard screen pass to start the scoring. However, the Cougars quickly countered with a 17-yard pass of their own, tying the game at 7-7 in the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Verzi scored with his legs on a three-yard dash and added a 30-yard pass to junior Tyree Jones putting the Braves up by 13. A missed PAT kept the score at 20-7. Late in the second quarter, the Cougars quickly drove downfield and a field goal brought the score to 20-10 as the half ended.
The one score in the second half came from within five yards, on another rushing touchdown for Verzi. Another missed PAT put the score at 26-10 where it stayed for the final score.
Verzi had four total touchdowns on the night and other notable performances came from senior Samuel White with a pair of sacks and senior Darius Jackson with an interception.
