On March 8, the boys volleyball team (1-3) defeated the Wekiva Mustangs (4-1) in three sets.
The first set began with a strong spike from senior Karl Schaefer who tied the score, 1-1. After five serves from senior Buddy Best the boys fell to a strong spike by a Wekiva player, 6-3. Senior, right side hitter, Brett Maneri spiked the ball reviving the team from multiple Wekiva spikes. Senior Parker Blanchard hit the ball advancing the boys, 14-10. Sophomore Douglas Page, who in the end had five kills, four aces, one block and nine digs, spiked the ball, 20-15. After multiple blocks the boys stayed strong and defeated the Mustangs in the first set, 25-21.
Maneri started the second set with a spike leading the boys, 2-0. Holding off the Mustangs, the boys had a seven point run, 7-0. An out of bounds serve got the Mustangs their first point of the set. Senior Toddrick Northington blocked the ball, 13-6. Wekiva service error advanced the Braves, 16-8. Multiple blocks from Schaefer, who lead the boys offense with 17 assists, five kills, two blocks and four aces. Northington tipped the ball to the other side to win the second set, 25-18.
At the beginning of the third set, Mustangs serve went into the net, 1-0. Page blocked the ball, 3-1. Senior Hunter Kinnett blocked the ball advancing the Braves, 6-3. Schaefer’s sneak tip brought the team to 10-4. In the end of the third set, Best spiked to put the team up 17-7. Worthington blocked the ball ending the game, 25-15. The boys earned their first win of the season.
The boys take on East River, March 13, at 7:30 p.m. at East River High School.
