FaceTime vs. SkypeBy MEGHAN COTTON

When deciding what app to use to video chat with friends and family, looking at the facts can help in decision making.

Two popular methods of video chat are FaceTime and Skype. Both apps are free of cost. FaceTime is pre-downloaded onto Apple devices and is only available on iPhones 4 and up, iPad second generation, iTouches 4th generation and up and Macs. Those who do not have Apple devices cannot use FaceTime. Skype is compatible with Apple, Android, and Windows phones, Mac and Linux computer.

FaceTime can only be used in locations with Wi-Fi whereas Skype can be used to make calls through Wi-Fi and cellular data. Both apps produce a similar calling experience; however FaceTime is more fluid and has better audio and visual synchronicity.

FaceTiming with someone is easy and fast, just type in an email address or a number or choose the “FaceTime” option in contacts. Skyping with someone requires sending a friend request and waiting for the person the accept it.

Overall, choosing the best video call app depends on the location, device and personal preference. If an Apple device is owned, then FaceTime is the best option when deciding between FaceTime and Skype.
